The Steering Committee
The Committee of Experts on the Organisational Aspects of Cooperation in Organ Transplantation (CD-P-TO) was set up following the 3rd Conference of European Health Ministers in Paris in 1987 on the ethical, organisational and legislative aspects of organ transplantation.
It undertakes to:
- examine questions related to the transplantation of organs, tissues and cells, notably as regards quality and safety standards and their implementation;
- examine the organisational structures concerning organ transplantation with a view to improve these structures and address the causes of organ shortage;
- develop links between the exchange organisations throughout Europe;
- propose ethical quality and safety standards on professional practices;
- monitor practices in Europe and assess risks linked to transplantation;
- ensure the transfer of knowledge and expertise and develop competencies of experts through training and networking;
- contribute to awareness-raising of the population in general on organ donation for transplantation;
- assist members states in improving organ transplantation services by promoting the principle of voluntary non-remunerated donations.
The Committee meets at least once a year for 3 days.
Membership
Dr. Bernard Loty chairs the Steering Committee and its vice-chair is Dr. Per Pfeffer.

The CD-P-TO has given priority to the following projects:
- Guide to Safety and Quality assurance for the Transplantation of Organs Tissues and Cells
To prepare the 4th edition an experts working group should be set up in October 2007. - Booklet on Living Donor Transplantation
A new booklet on regulatory and technical matters related to living donor transplantation should be prepared and published as an advise for authorities. - Transplant newsletter on International Figures on Organ Donation and Transplantation
Performance of the 2006 data collection campaign and publication of next issue of the letter in 2008.
