Homepage / Control of Medicines / Market Surveillance Study (MSS)
MSS studies are carried out on commercialised available medicines having a national marketing authorisation. Products are tested according to a common protocol and on a basis of national sampling. These studies have to be multilateral to ensure that the quality of same type of medicine is comparable in the different member states. Usually, several general studies on market surveillance of products commercialised in countries from the whole of Europe are organised yearly, with the participation of an average of 12 OMCLs of the Network. The studies deal with different types of preparations of an active principle as well as herbal drugs.
Where a need is identified, the results of these studies will support revision of the relevant European Pharmacopoeia monographs and/or general chapters and methods.
Market Surveillance Studies (MSS) aimed at screening the quality of products commercialised in countries of the Network were carried out for the following products in 2007: diclofenac retard preparations, procaine-containing aqueous solutions for injection and essentials oils (coriander, lavender and peppermint oil). An average of 12 OMCLs participated in each of the studies.
Two additional studies were finalised in 2007: the MSS on erythromycin liquid preparations and erythromycin ester preparations as well as trimethoprim (raw material (API) and tablets).
